About Zaytoun
Zaytoun is a Community Interest Company founded in 2004 to create and develop a UK market for Palestinian produce.
The company is a cooperative, and a member of the International Fair Trade Association. Their primary objectives lie with the welfare of the producing communities.
Since its inception, Zaytoun has imported and distributed 170 tons of olive oil to a mixture of retail and wholesale customers, in addition to regional fair-trade and Palestine campaign groups. Jewish, Muslim and Christian faith groups have also taken an interest, ordering the oil for their places of worship and to sell at local stalls as part of a message of inter-faith peace promotion. Southwark Cathedral even uses the olive oil for anointing in various services throughout the year.
Zaytoun is an ethical business established to support marginalized farming communities in Palestine.
Palestine is the home of the olive tree, supporting over half the population dominating the agricultural landscape.
As a non-profit company their primary objectives lie with the welfare of the producing communities. They invest in empowering farming communities developing the agricultural infrastructure in Palestine.

Not long ago Ibrahim Doik and many of the other date farmers in Jericho were having to sell their dates below cost price and even having to give them away for fear of them rotting before being consumed. Their problem? Their largest competitors were selling their dates at way below cost price (enabled by government subsidies) making Ibrahim and the other Palestinian farmers dates too expensive for consumers to be tempted. The competitors were of course The large illegal Israeli settlements in the Jordan Valley. With more support from consumers in the UK the farmers hope to be able to increase production so they can stand on their own feet and earn a living with the dignity they deserve.
These dates are Fair Trade, Soil Association and World Fair Trade certified.
